A ‘river cleanup campaign’ launched by the learners from Bukazi Secondary School from the OR Tambo district in the Eastern Cape had a further reaching impact than just on their direct community, as initially intended. The campaign was launched as the student’s project for the 2023 Youth Citizens Action Programme (YCAP) and awarded the group first place in the National Championships Senior Category.

The group set out to ensure clean and healthier water was more readily available to their community by cleaning debris and garbage from the river and building a river bank with old tyres to prevent ground erosion into the river. The group even created a separate drinking hole for the dogs and other animals of the community, to keep the animals out of the water intended for human consumption. The group’s efforts were so successful that members from surrounding communities started to make use of their river rather than the ones closer to where they live, resulting in them impacting the lives of more than 500 people.
