Provincial Stakeholder Consultations on the Draft Protocol and Guidelines

Posted by Karabo Kgophane on 27 October 2022, 14:40 SAST

With inequality perpetuated by racism, xenophobia, gender stereotypes, harmful gender norms, discrimination and related intolerances, schools seem to face a great deal of obstacles, which impact negatively on learning, teaching and general school governance. The Council for Education Ministries released two documents for intensive consultation in provinces and districts, to address intersectional matters of transformation in in the education system.

Intersectional matters include special education needs, child protection, persons affected by racism and xenophobia, emphasising the child’s right to dignity, sexual and gender diversity, safety, confidentiality, play, and participation, and also includes children of refugees and programmes that focus on Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC).

As we incrementally work towards rights-based, socially inclusive and cohesive schools; South Africa is committed to working with key stakeholders to ensure all children feel welcomed in school, irrespective of their background, colour, creed or diverse sexual orientation. These consultations are an intentional approach towards strengthening the guidelines and protocol that will be followed in addressing the myriad of unfair discrimination(s) in schools because...all children matter.
