Do you think that learners who repeat grades get enough additional assistance to master skills they did not manage to grasp the first time? If not what do you think needs to be done differently?

As we enter a post- lockdown period of schooling, we must think about what is happening in our schools, and what impact this will have on learner repetition and dropout – particularly in the context of an ongoing pandemic.

No I do not. I think they are simply put back in to the same system that failed them the first time. I think we need to unpack what gaps led to them failing the grade, and then target those areas as opposed to just blanket repetition and hoping for the best. Often it is foundational skills that are lacking, and these wont necessarily be gained by repeating the grade.

Indeed, the purpose of grade repetition should be to remediate. Often we find that classrooms are so burdened there is no space for remediation.

In South Africa 20% of learners in grade 10; 11 and 12 are 3 or more years overage for their grade. Being over-age for your grade is a risk factor for dropout and thus it is very important to ensure grade repetition is managed intentionally.
