The Dropout Funnel: The "Leaky Pipeline"
The Challenge:
Approximately 50% of learners who start Grade 1 do not reach Matric. The "leak" is most severe after Grade 9, where the pressure of the FET phase begins and the "Certificate of Education" ends. Learners who have been struggling quietly for years finally give up and leave, often feeding into the unemployment crisis.
The Solution: "From Dropouts to Drop-Ins"
- School as Sanctuary: We recognise that for many vulnerable children, school is the only stable place in their lives. We focus on creating a sense of Belonging.
- Attendance as Care: We change how we view the register. A missing child is not a statistic; they are a signal. We intervene early when patterns of absenteeism start, because we know that "staying in school" is a child's best shield against poverty.
