What is a "Learning disability"?
A learning disability can be defined as a neurological condition that affects an individual's ability to acquire, process, or retain information effectively. It is a broad term that covers various learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), among many others.
People with learning disabilities face challenges in areas such as reading, writing, spelling, mathematics, memory, and attention as well as organisation to name a few. These difficulties are not typically caused by factors such as lack of intelligence, inadequate instruction, or environmental disadvantages. Instead, they are attributed to differences in brain structure and function.
Learning disabilities can vary in severity and impact individuals differently. Some people may have mild learning disabilities that are manageable with appropriate support and strategies, while others may experience more significant challenges that require specialised interventions. It is important to note that learning disabilities are distinct from intellectual disabilities, as individuals with learning disabilities often have average or above-average intelligence.
Support and accommodations can help individuals with learning disabilities overcome challenges and reach their full potential. This may include specialised instruction, assistive technologies, individualised educational plans, and strategies tailored to their specific needs. Check out the resources below to learn more
