Ideas on better communications with parents

Today’s high-paced world often creates communication challenges for teachers, learners and parents. However, effective communication is vital to positive relationships and building partnerships with parents. When teachers and parents partner together students are likely to perform better in school. Here are some ways to effectively communicate with parents.

Communicate on a regular basis

Regardless of how you choose to communicate, it is crucial that communication occurs on a regular basis to strengthen relationships and partnerships among teachers and parents. Make sure you keep parents informed, celebrate successes with one another and develop plans to improve challenging student behaviours.

Communicate in the parent’s language

To successfully communicate with others, you must do so in a language they understand. With an increased number of parents that do not speak English, you must be creative in communicating effectively. Ask a colleague that speaks their language to assist you in writing to your student's parents. You can also try Google Translate and Microsoft Translator as a resource for translating documents into a language that is understood by non-English speaking parents.

Communicate in a digital format

Many parents might prefer technology-based communication which fits more easily into their personal and work schedules. Keep them informed through video conferencing, texts and emails. Offer phone calls, texts, emails, and video chatting as options for digital communication resources that can be used by busy parents and teachers.
