Heading: Update on the Spell2read2write programme Q1, 2024

My name is Anwer Douw and I am A Teacher Assistant at Philipvale Primary School. This is my update for Quarter 1 of 2024.
In Quarter 1, we completed the following activities of the spell2read2write programme:
The Vowel Charts
Oral Readeing Fluency
Nalibali stories
The highlights for the Quarter was that more learners were able to recall what they have learned especially with the vowels. The stories that were read were quite enjoyed by the learners and what is more is that they understood the morals of the stories.
The challenges I found were that some of the learners were shy to read out loud and most of them struggle to read English. In this regard we had to first read them the story and explain it to them in their mother tongue for them to grasp the story. In the last couple of weeks however, we were unable to continue with the learners, because the teachers were starting with their assessments and time was limited.
In the next Quarter I will be focusing on more of the songs of the vowels and spelling tests as well as attempt to let the learners read more often. Even though most learners struggle to read English I will do my utmost best to assist in anyway I find possible. Even if it means staying after school to do more with those of them that struggle more than others.
