Update on spell2read2write program term 1, 2024

My name is Devine Stoffels and I am a teacher’s assistant at Philipvale Primary school. The school is situated in Philipstown, zip code 8795. This is my update for term 1.

As a newly appointed teachers assistant who started 1 March 2024, I was able to successfully complete the ORF test. This allowed me to select the 15 priority learners, which will allow me to go to work as soon as the 2nd term begin.

My highlights this term was completing the Alison courses. They gave me new insights and knowledge helpful in real-life situations. Some of the knowledge I will transfer to learners as it also suites them and can be helpful to them as well. Additionally, I was able to seamlessly integrate into the role as TA, by setting up everything that is needed (ABA website and Yenza accounts), as well as complete the ORF test.

As expected, part of the challenges was learner’s discipline. This is being disrespectful towards each other and not completing their work as needed. Additionally, there was a struggle with keeping them focused on the bigger picture as they realize and sometimes say it “they can’t read”. This I will improve by making use of interactive activities, positive reinforcement and constant motivation.

In term 2 I will focus on letter sounds and the basic sight words. The letter sounds (vowels) in case they need to spell a word at some point and the sight words to help them instantly recognize basic words when reading. Additionally, I will focus on 3 and 4 letter words. Furthermore, I will incorporate the use of interactive activities such as games on the schools’ tablets to enhance their learning experience and simply keep them interested. I will provide them with regular reading opportunities and use genres that interest them. Ultimately, I will test them regularly to track their progress.

Overall, I think it has been a productive term, which gives me confidence that the next term will be even better.
