Update on the spell2read2write programme Q1, 2024.
My name is Akhile Magoqoza, I am a teacher assistant at Maruping Primary School. This is my update for Q1 2024.
-In Q1, we completed the following activities of the spell2read2write programme:
We conducted the Oral Reading Fluency test to determine the learning/development stage of the programme participants.
Introduced the different vowel sounds to the leaners. (e.g Vowel ‘A’ sounds as ‘eh’ or ‘ay’).
We ensured that the participants could recite the vowel songs in order to be able to identify them.
Consonant sounds were also introduced to the leaners in preparation for the tests they will write in the future.
The learners were given the tools to aid them in understanding vowels and consonants (e.g Printed sheets with vowels and consonants alongside pictures for visual learning).
-The highlight for the quarter was seeing the priority learners getting eager to learn even in their mainstream subjects. Moreover, the Alison courses aided me in understanding how to navigate working with leaners and the working environment in general.
- The challenges I found were trying to meet the deadlines for my work with the learners, amidst the academic pressure the learners had in their mainstream subjects.
- In the next quarter I will be focusing on teaching the learners how to apply what they have learned practically, by conducting short tests to test their knowledge. Moreover, the leaners will read short stories to improve their reading abilities and write tests on these stories.
