IT outsourcing firm, Wipro has joined forces with Adopt-a-School Foundation, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), and the Nelson Mandela Foundation to enable   for Zamokuhle Junior Secondary School in the Eastern Cape.

In line with making Zamokuhle Junior Secondary an ICT-enabled school, Wipro says it provided 20 desktop computers and a few television screens, which will be used for educational and training purposes.

IDC provided funds towards building the school's infrastructure, including an early childhood development centre as well as a media centre that includes an ICT lab and library, says the Indian IT outsourcing giant. The Nelson Mandela Foundation contributed books for the library.

Vusi Mhlarhi, finance director for Wipro's South African division, says: "We are excited and honoured to be a part of this initiative. It reaffirms our commitment towards fostering an IT-enabled educational eco-system in South Africa from a grassroots level. We firmly believe that giving back to society is a vital part of our core  system."

According to Wipro, this ICT initiative is part of a larger project with the IDC's Whole School Development Programme. The programme was launched in 2012, in association with the Department of Basic Education and Adopt-a-School Foundation.

Wipro notes that it joined the IDC programme back in 2016. "We will continue collaborating with IDC to address the issue of overcrowding and the high educators per child ratio. By this, we want to ensure that every student has access to learning even in the absence of a teacher," adds Mhlarhi.
